How to become a surrogate- Finding an agency
Once you have decided that surrogacy is something you would like to do it is important to find an agency to work with. The surrogacy process is often very long and extensive meaning that you will want an agency that will support and communicate with you.
In order to get started on your surrogacy journey you should narrow down agencies based on certain factors such as:
How long they have been open
Their success rate and testimonials from previous clients
What legal issues may arise during the process and how are they handled
How communication between you, the agency, and the intended parents will be made
Expenses and compensation
How you will receive payment
The average amount of time you can be expected for travel and appointments in a week
How matching with parents can be made and if you get any choice
What you can expect from implantation to the birth
If you need insurance coverage for surrogacy
What is procedure if any complications with the pregnancy arise
Does the agency offer support to their surrogates
While these are just a few things you should know about your agency there will always be more questions that will come up as the process moves forward. For your own protection and safety it is important that your agency has great customer support and communication so that you will be able to have any problems resolved quickly and with ease. Depending on your personal support needs the level of agency involvement is up to you. If there is ever an issue between you and the intended parents you should never feel like you can't turn to your agency for support.
According to Lisa Stark-Hughes of GS Moms, "Hopeful parents have many options when it comes to starting a family, and parents should consider all of the benefits and challenges of egg donation and surrogacy before committing to the process."
