The surrogacy process- Getting approved to become a surrogate

Once you have decided that surrogacy is something you would like to pursue you will probably be overwhelmed with what the whole process entails. While it may seem stressful the surrogacy process is broken into many steps that will all be explained in depth as you transition into them as GS Moms will be there with you every step of the way. The first step is to of course fill out an application. Since surrogacy is costly and extensive it is important that potential surrogates meet certain requirements.

This list is not limited to, but includes:

Medical history, current medications, qualifying BMI and psychological evaluation.

Criminal history and background check

Legalities of surrogacy in your state

Once your application is approved and you have met the right qualifications you will undergo extensive procedures including a full exam at an IVF office. After you have been officially cleared you will go through the entire legal process to ensure that you understand all the agreements of the surrogacy experience. Next, get ready to be matched with your intended family! Your agency will match parents that have similar characteristics to you so you can meet and decide if you would like to proceed with that family. Once you and a family have been matched you will be ready to move into the next step to prepare for implantation. While the first steps of your surrogacy journey seem quite overwhelming the beginning proceedings will take 1-3 months in total ensuring that you understand the details of each agreement you make. Officially being approved for surrogacy may come with a myriad of feelings including joy and fear, it is important that you use this time to gain support from your family and friends and are not afraid to lean on your agency for help. Surrogacy is a huge commitment, but you are not going to endure it alone.

According to Lisa Stark-Hughes of GS Moms, "Hopeful parents have many options when it comes to starting a family, and parents should consider all of the benefits and challenges of egg donation and surrogacy before committing to the process."
