Excess production of prolactin, or hyperprolactinemia, in women who are not pregnant can lead to infertility by disrupting ovulation. Women with hyperprolactinemia produce too much prolactin, which is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates milk production in pregnant women. For women who are not pregnant hyperprolactinemia can cause a milky discharge from the breast to be produced, which can be a tell tale sign that prolactin levels are too high.
